Marbella is the first ‘Smart Tourism Destination’ in Andalucia – but what does it all mean?

You may be accustomed to seeing Marbella as many things – including as a land of sun, sea and sand – but have you ever thought of it as being smarter than your smartphone?

That is the conclusion you may now reach, in the wake of the news that Marbella has become the first city in Andalucia to be bestowed with the title of Smart Tourism Destination, courtesy of the Institute for Spanish Tourism Quality.

Marbella has been handed this accolade on account of its “innovation and sustainability”, the city and municipality having undergone various initiatives in relation to digital transformation, accessibility, energy efficiency, and social and environmental innovation.

The importance of many of these measures – geared towards enhancing Marbella’s technological sophistication to help make life easier for residents and visitors alike – has arguably become even greater in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A “cutting-edge offer compared with direct competitors”

Marbella mayor Ángeles Muñoz recently said in light of the locality’s new title that now is “a crucial moment for the sector, which is in the midst of a transformation due to the pandemic”.

She added that Marbella being handed the status of ‘Smart Tourism Destination’ distinguished between “a before and an after” in the implementation of different strategies aimed at consolidating the reputation of Marbella and its “cutting-edge offer compared with direct competitors.”

Muñoz stated that the title showed Marbella had “done their homework” in ensuring the evergreen tourist destination served the new demands of visitors; she added that there would also be a new commitment to “continue advancing in all these areas”.

In fact, Marbella has already enjoyed the status of ‘Smart City’ since 2013. That particular initiative involved investment in hi-tech improvements such as the addition of QR codes on town hall and cultural buildings, to allow both residents and visitors to more easily access information even when the buildings are closed.

Marbella committed to the Smart Tourist Destination Scheme in 2014, when it resolved to introduce further measures, such as improved visitor data collection as part of the streamlining of day-to-day tourism management in the municipality.
