If you’re spending time in the city of Málaga, don’t forget to sample some of the best in contemporary art

While we are proud here at Simply Shuttles to arrange Málaga Airport transfers to all manner of sunny and in-demand locations around the Costa del Sol, it’s also true that sometimes, the greatest pleasures can be found closer to home. And, well, if Málaga isn’t exactly ‘home’ to you, you might well wish it was, such are its abundant charms with regard to heritage, culture and leisure.

Certainly when it comes to art galleries and museums, Málaga scores highly, with institutions to explore ranging from the Museo de Málaga with its emphasis on fine art and archaeology, to the Málaga arm of Centre Pompidou, which enables you to sample some of the best of the collection of the gallery otherwise best known for its Paris presence.

For many fans of art at the more contemporary end of the spectrum, however, one institution here is a particular magnet: the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga (or ‘Contemporary Art Centre of Málaga’, also known as CAC Málaga), which has attracted considerable international renown.

What can you expect on a visit to CAC Málaga?

You will find CAC Málaga at Calle Alemania in the city, and the striking architecture might entrance you enough, even before you walk inside; that’s because it is based in the old Málaga Wholesale Market building, which has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in Spain.

CAC Málaga opened to the public in this remarkable structure in February 2003, and it has since made good use of its 2,400 square metres of exhibition space to build a reputation as one of the finest places in the region to experience thought-provoking visual art of the 20th and 21st centuries.

There are some 400 pieces in the museum’s own collection, and over the years, it has showcased works by many of the most distinguished names in art, ranging from Art & Language, Tony Cragg, and Gerhard Richter to Anish Kapoor, Alex Katz, and Tracey Emin. In addition, the gallery has long exhibited the works of emerging Spanish artists.

Nor does CAC Málaga solely put on exhibitions, as talks, guided visits, and other events also routinely take place here. Nonetheless, with its five spaces overall – one for the permanent collection, three for temporary exhibitions, and another serving as a multipurpose space for various activities – whether your artistic taste leans towards paintings, sculptures, photography, drawings, installations, or design objects, you are sure to be glad you visited.
