Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport’s footfall surpassed pre-pandemic levels in January 2023

Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport’s footfall surpassed pre-pandemic levels in January 2023

Málaga Airport on the Costa del Sol has flown into 2023 with elevated passenger numbers. The rate of passengers passing through the airport has surpassed pre-pandemic levels for the first time, reporting over 1.1 million passengers in January alone.

How does that compare to previous years?

As revealed by Aena – the company that operates the airport – and reported by SUR in English, the passenger rate recorded in January was 10.5% higher than the same month in 2019. Although the airport recovered around 93% of pre-pandemic traffic throughout 2022, the figures from January 2023 show a massive 61% increase compared to January 2022.

This is even more impressive when compared to 2020, when the waxing and waning of the pandemic was at its height. Passenger traffic in the entirety of 2020 amounted to 5.13 million passengers – in other words, in a single month of 2023, Málaga Airport racked up almost 22% of the foot traffic of all 12 months of 2020 combined.

But it’s not just footfall that has soared past pre-pandemic levels

Data from January 2023 also show that runways were busier than before the pandemic. Total aircraft takeoffs and landings exceeded 9,000 in January – that’s an increase of just under 6% compared to 2019.

Of these, the volume of flights to and from international destinations saw an increase of 1.6% on 2019, and 15.3% on 2022. Domestic Spanish flights also saw a boost in popularity – specifically, 12.3% higher than 2019 and 28.4% higher than 2022.

That said, when it comes to the most popular origin or destination for flights to and from Málaga Airport, the UK prevails. In January 2023, 216,828 passengers travelled between the Costa del Sol and the UK. The closest contender, the Netherlands, merely tallied 79,653 passengers, with Germany not far behind with 66,747.

Why not see why the Costa del Sol is so popular for yourself?
