The dining establishments of the Costa del Sol are well-accustomed to achieving high rankings in restaurant guides. However, even by those standards, such businesses’ showings in a recent highly respected league table have been impressive.
We are, of course, referring to the Opinionated About Dining (OAD) guide, which began life as a blog but has gone on to become a hugely authoritative source of information on acclaimed eateries.
With the OAD guide having returned for 2024, its list of Europe’s best casual restaurants has a Fuengirola fish and seafood establishment at the very top. The business in question is Los Marinos José, which is operated by Pablo and José Sánchez, alongside their three brothers.
Going from strength to strength after a landmark refurbishment
Although the beachfront restaurant has a history that can be traced back more than three decades, Los Marinos José certainly isn’t living in the past in the 2020s. In fact, it was only just over two months ago when the establishment swung back open its doors, following a major refurbishment.
The restaurant – famed for its grilled sardines and octopus paired with fine Spanish wines, as well as an its open-air terrace, which treats patrons to satisfying ocean breezes – spent several years in third place in the ranking.
However, this widely admired eatery has now finally taken first position. It is joined by three other restaurants from Málaga province in the Top 100: Hermanos Alba in Málaga (53rd), Tánicos from Fuengirola (65th), and Parador Playa in Benalmádena (96th).
As news website SUR in English recently reported, various other local restaurants appear in the 700 that make up the fuller list. These encompass such well-regarded places to eat as Kütral, Ronda; La Taberna de Mike Palmer in Málaga; Sidrería Usategui in Marbella; El Campanario Golf, Estepona; Arte de Cozina in Antequera; and many more.
Alongside the casual restaurants category, the latest OAD rankings include two other categories: top restaurants and classics. Both these categories have Málaga restaurants featured in them.
You won’t be short of thrilling culinary experiences on the Costa del Sol
Of course, rankings like these – as respected as they are – only further confirm what so many visitors to this part of Andalucia already know and appreciate: the Costa del Sol is one of the areas of Europe to which to head for utterly rewarding gastronomy.
