If you’re an enthusiast of modern art, or even if you just tend to pop into contemporary art galleries from time to time on your trips around the world, the chances are that you will be familiar with Paris’s iconic Centre Pompidou.
What you might not know so well, though, is that the celebrated Musée National d’Art Moderne – which is the national modern art museum housed in that unmistakable building – also has an offshoot in the Spanish city of Málaga.
Furthermore, news has just come through during the past month that the satellite gallery is set to be with us until at least 2034! So, if you haven’t got round to checking out this fascinating 65,000-square-feet gallery yet, and the thought-provoking art that it hosts, you now have plenty more time to do so.
What exactly is the Centre Pompidou Málaga?
Despite the gallery space itself being subterranean, this offshoot of the popular Parisian attraction isn’t exactly difficult to spot in its waterfront location, as it is topped by a multicoloured glass cube, the work of artist Daniel Buren.
The gallery can be found between Docks 1 and 2 in the city’s port area, in front of the waters of the bay of Málaga. It is well worth seeking out, not least because of the artworks themselves; a permanent tour displays works chosen from the Centre Pompidou collection, taking visitors to on a journey through the evolution of 20th-century and 21st-century art.
The fifth tour – which runs until 28th March 2025 – is “Place-ness: Habiter en lieu”. It focuses on the concept of “territory”, with depictions of “indeterminate spaces in our post-industrial society”.
As reported by ARTnews, Centre Pompidou president Laurent Le Bon said it was an “immense pleasure” to extend the museum’s presence in Málaga for another decade. This means that – with the gallery having debuted as a pop-up along the city’s waterfront in March 2015 – it will have spent just short of two decades in Málaga.
