La Araña — Andalucía’s longest climbing wall — opens to the public

There will be a lot for you to clap your eyes on when you go sightseeing in Andalucía. This part of Peninsular Spain is resplendent in awe-inspiring scenery — from sandy beaches to lush green countryside, not to mention mountainous terrain.

Speaking of such terrain, if you have been planning a trip to the Costa del Sol and have had some hiking and climbing in mind, you might have been advised to check out a “via ferrata”. This term – technically Italian – refers to a type of mountain route where ladders, cables, and bridges have been fitted for the public’s use.

A new via ferrata — named La Araña — has been inaugurated only about 500 metres north of Güéjar Sierra, a village in Spain’s Granada province. La Araña’s features include a wall climb, suspension bridges, and zip wires — one of which is as long as 860 metres.

La Arańa attracts high praise from local people

José Robles, Mayor of Güéjar Sierra, attended the inauguration ceremony, enthusing about how La Araña made the municipality’s sports tourism offer even more appealing.

Indeed, the area already hosts a number of major sporting events, including the Caras Nortes SKY RACE — where, on 30th November, trail running is set to take place in the Sierra Nevada area.

La Araña is also roughly a hundred metres from the newly renovated El Calar municipal football pitch, where car parks also available for our drivers at Simply Shuttles to use when transporting holidaymakers.

So, why might you ask one of our friendly and professional drivers to take you close to La Araña? Here, we refer you to Robles’ words during this via ferrata’s inauguration…

“We are talking about a route with the longest zip wire in Spain within a via ferrata and spectacular views, as it is located at an altitude of between 1,210 and 1,309 metres above sea level and facing the giants of the Sierra Nevada,” the mayor declared as quoted by SUR in English

Monica Castillo — from provincial authority the Diputación de Granada — was also at La Araña’s official opening. She said the authority was committed “to projects that promote the economic and social development of our province”.

She clearly regarded La Araña as one such project: “The via ferrata will be a great attraction for both locals and visitors and will help to enhance the stunning natural environment of Güéjar Sierra.”
